Kern River Rafting

The 155 mile long Kern River flows through Eastern California. Kern River rafting is one of many water sports enjoyed on this scenic stretch of water.

The Kern River flows through a 155 mile course in eastern California. It is fed by the snow melts of the area around Mt. Whitney and passes through many scenic canyons. It features some really challenging white water rapids which makes it a hot spot for river rafters and kayaks. The river is a recreational treasure. In addition to Kern River rafting and other boating activities, the river features excellent fishing opportunities.

The major attraction of the Kern River for rafting fans is the incredible amount of challenging rapids. As the river passes Northeast of Bakersfield, California, it passes through the Kern Canyon. This area is nicknamed the “Killer Kern”, and a sign at the entrance to the Canyon warns—Danger, Stay Out and Stay Alive. The sign is completely serious as it then lists the total number of deaths by accidents that have taken place inside the Canyon. As of July 9, 2007, the total is 250.

Country Music star Merle Haggard who was born in Bakersfield recorded a song about this part of the River called “Kern River.” In the lower part of the river, the drop is about 16 feet per mile which allows some nice Class 3 and 4 rapids. This area abounds with put ins and take out spots. Most of the put ins have camping facilities nearby. It is easy to plan a trip on the river to include just the right Class rapids that your group and experience can handle.

At the end of the lower Kern River, there is a serious Class 5 rapid that marks the end of the prime white water rafting area. These rapids are well marked and signs give approaching rafters ample warning. There is a place to get out of the water and a fairly easy portage around the rapids. After this comes a long area of relatively flat water ideal for float trips. Many people float this section on inner tubes tied together with coolers floating between them.

From its beginnings in the mountain canyons until its endings in the farmlands where much of the river flow is diverted for irrigation purposes, the Kern River is a recreational treasure of California. It is the best rafting venue west of the Colorado River and its proximity to the large population centers of California make it a well used asset as well.
