Rafting the Rogue River
The Rogue River is located in southwestern Oregon and runs for approximately 215 miles from the Cascade Range to the Pacific Ocean. This river is known for its rustic scenery and is a favorite spot for river adventurers of all ages. Rafting the Rogue River is a popular pastime for locals as well as tourists who are enchanted by its beautiful and historic scenery. Rafters travel through volcanic provinces and as the Rogue flows west they can see some of the world’s greatest examples of rocks that form the Earth’s mantle. More exciting still are the dinosaur remains that were found near the mouth of the river along the coast of Curry County. These are the only dinosaur remains that have ever been found in Oregon. Oregon is also home to some incredible wildlife which can be spotted while floating down the Rogue River.
There are many river rafting companies based along the Rogue River that offer a variety of packages sure to fit all skill levels, ages, and group sizes. Rogue Wilderness Adventures offers single and multi-day trips for the both the casual rafter and the die-hard nature lover. Based out of Merlin, Oregon, their trips feature a Wild and Scenic Section and a Recreation Section. Their single day excursions are available in both half and full day packages and feature moderate whitewater rapids in the Recreation Section ranging from class 1 to class 3.
Multi day packages are available in a variety of options. You can choose a 2, 3, or 4 day rafting trip, with your nights being spent either camping in the great outdoors or cozying up in a quaint wilderness lodge accessible only by river. These multi-day trips traverse the Wild and Scenic portion of the river and are sure to provide memories that last a lifetime with rapids ranging from Class 1 to Class 4+.
When preparing to raft the Rogue River, or any river for that matter, there are some important factors to keep in mind. The first is your level of fitness. While you do not need to be in body-builder shape, the more physically active you are, the more you will enjoy your rafting experience. The Wild and Scenic section of the Rogue River requires more exertion than merely tubing down a lazy river, and you will be required to participate in paddling through the rapids. Rafting is not recommended for women who are pregnant or anyone who may suffer from a heart condition.
You also need to be mindful when packing for your trip. While life jackets and helmets will be provided by the rafting company, there are some essentials you may need to provide yourself. If your river trip includes an overnight camping excursion, you should check with your guide to see which camping necessities are provided and which you need to bring yourself. You should bring warm clothes for the evenings and dress in layers while out on the river. Don’t forget to pack your waterproof camera so you can capture all those priceless moments you’ll treasure for a lifetime.
