Vermilion River Rafting
The Vermilion River is a very popular destination for river rafting in the Midwest. It begins its 50 mile course on the border of Ford and Livingston counties and then deepens as it winds through Matthiessen State Park. Finally, it flows into the Illinois River near La Salle. The Vermilion River is unique in that it is one of the rare rivers that run south to north. There are several stretches of white water as well as miles of calm water with numerous eddies and slack pools. Whether taking a raft out for some fishing or some white water adventures, everyone is guaranteed to have a good time when rafting the Vermilion River.
The best time of year for Vermilion River rafting is from May to mid July when the spring rains increase the river’s depth and speed. The river boasts approximately 14 rapids in a 9 and ½ mile stretch and most are Class I or Class II. When the river is at its deepest some of the rapids are classified as Class III. The relatively low difficulty of the river’s white water section makes it the perfect destination for beginning rafters and families with young children. Older children can paddle along while younger children can enjoy the excitement of the rapids from the safety of the center of the raft. Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops have been enjoying the excitement of the Vermilion River for years and it is considered a key part of their wilderness training.
Another delightful aspect of the Vermilion River is its remoteness. Along the entire course of the river the only man-made structure one will encounter is Lone Star Cement Plant toward the river’s end. With no roads or highways nearby, the Vermilion River is a place where one can reconnect with nature and spend time with friends and loved ones without being pestered by noisy traffic or other modern annoyances. Fishermen also love the Vermilion River for its stretches of calm water. There are numerous eddies and slack pools teeming with many species of fish. For those who want to spend the day on the river but avoid the rush of the rapids, you can rent a raft, pack a lunch, and head out for some fishing and relaxation.
When preparing for your rafting trip on the Vermilion River, there are a few essentials you will need to pack. Be sure to dress in layers and bring towels to dry off before the bus ride back to your rafting company. Some companies require that rafters go out with a guide and others will rent equipment to experienced rafters and let them journey out on their own. Most river rafting companies provide life jackets and helmets, but you should double check when you make your reservation. If you are planning to spend your rafting trip fishing, you will either need to bring your own fishing equipment or rent from your rafting company. You will also want to pack plenty of sunscreen and a waterproof camera to capture all of the day’s fun and excitement.
